Bawandar is based on the true story of a Rajasthani social worker Bhanwari Devi. She was brutally raped by the higher caste men in 1992. Bhanwari was raped because she protested child marriages, while the men supported it. Her fight for justice have been going on since then. The movie is about that high profile case and the incident behind it.

Womens groups in Rajasthan and Delhi took up Bhanwari Devi's case in a big way. They were shocked when the district sessions judge pronounced in November 1995 that an upper-caste man could not have raped a Dalit.

The residents of Bhateri were very sore at Bhanwari Devi; they said she had besmirched the villages name. When she was taken to Beijing for an international conference, they said, 'Usne to Bharat ki naak kaat di'. (Bhanwari has sullied Indias honour.)

The movie is set in a remote village in Rajasthan, India. It is a different world. A world, very far away from us.A world where child marriage still happens, where the age old code of caste system is followed, where a man can have his way, where questioning and reasoning are a SIN.

Nandita Das plays the role of Bhanwari devi renamed as Saanvri in the movie and Raghuveer Yadav plays her husband Sohan.Shobha Devi(Deepthi naval) is a fellow social worker.
