Pakistani film actress Veena Malik, 30, was handed 26 years in jail for blasphemy according to her controversial staged wedding scene based on the Islamic prophet Mohamed’s daughter’s wedding.
Her husband, Asad Bashir Khan, who also participated in the scene, and Mir Shakil-ur-Rehman, the head of the TV station, were also sentenced to 26 years.
According to the court order, “The malicious acts of the proclaimed offenders ignited the sentiments of all the Muslims of the country and hurt the feelings, which cannot be taken lightly and there is need to strictly curb such tendency.”
Malik, who lives in Dubai, said she will return to Pakistan in December to appeal the judgement.
The order will be enforced in the city of Gilgit. That makes it unlikely to be implemented because the Gilgit-Baltistan region is not a full-fledged province by Pakistan, and verdicts by its court does not apply to the rest of the country.
In 2011, Malik outraged the killjoys when she posed for a photo series for the Indian edition of bro’ bible, FHM.
“I have faced highs and lows in my life. But I am sure I haven't done anything wrong,” Malik said.
