'Cuts & Contributions'; a workshop by Kris Canavan at 25SG Newcastle July 2011.
Each participant brought three of their chosen props to the workshop. A series of individual and collaborative impromptu performances took place over the first two days. On the third day myself and Nick Kilby pared off and began devising an action.
By the end of the week a performance had been agreed upon. The action was then performed to a live audience in a garage space at 25SG.
At the time of the workshop the phone hacking scandal involving the major newspaper 'News of the world' ruptured through the press. Also the cuts which had effected many institutions, one being the arts council funding became our subject matter.
With these subjects in mind 'Nest' became our physical response.
The props used were two rescue Anne masks, piercing needles, newspaper, water and urine.
In a converted garage newspapers carpeted the floor, two five litre bottles of water on one side of the space with a transparent tube feeding out of the containers and taped to the wall. Myself and Kilby wore only masks, pierced to our faces. We scuttled blindly, squatted and urinated, fed ourselves the soiled lies then spat them back out into a corner, building up grey matter we repeated this action for three hours.
We make our homes in your shit.
A physical reaction of dismissing and processing what is essentially fecal matter had to take place; an overwhelming need to deconstruct the lies and create something more tangible, even if it was only a piss soaked ball of grey. The desolate landscape of current politics had to be presented and strung up like the greasy, crippled animal that it was.
