In this 1997 May 27 address at Birmingham, UK, MQM Chief Altaf Hussain bares the truth however uncomfortable it may be for Pakistanis who profess false loyalty to the issue of Kashmir. He rips apart insincerity and incompetence of Pakistani diplomats and explains how Pakistanis played football with Kashmiris for 50 years. Whatever Pakistan did to Kashmir in all these years was drama, lies, nonsense and cheating. With English Subtitles.
Note: Altaf Hussain refers twice to 1992-94 Pakistan Army operation against MQM in which thousands of Muhajirs were killed or have gone missing. Hundreds were killed extra-judicially in what is referred as Operation Clean-Up or Operation Blue Fox.

"Who else will understand, other than us (MQM), the pains inflicted on you by Indian Army. We have been through it. Day and night. Survived (Pak Army operation against MQM) for 5 years. We know the situation of that mother and that father when their young son is taken away and the next day his dead body arrives at home. That mother who called him pet names like 'Guddu', 'Pappu' and reared him with love, without trial and without presenting before a court, he is murdered extra-judicially how would that mother look at the body of her young son. Kashmiris, we understand your pain. Who would understand you better than us (Muhajirs)?
These many kashmiris. All the wars you fought in the name of Kashmir - it's all drama, cheating. Whatever you did in the name of Kashmir is all nonsense and a lie. No. For God's sake, there must be friendship but not at the cost of future of Kashmiris.
For God's sake, no such friendship. Am I right? Are you with me? Tell me honestly.
No LoC - Line of Control. I and you cannot do this. I think -
What slogans did we shout? 'Kashmir will become Pakistan'. It was all drama. Lies.
'Kashmir will become Pakistan'. Altaf Hussain is a traitor. Altaf Hussain is this and that.
Come to Altaf Hussain with guts and say it now. If this (accepting LoC) happens, then I think then we leave the future of Kashmiris in the unending dark tunnels of history. What do you think? Am I right? Is what I say is a lie? Am I wrong?
Look at the situation of our foreign policy and international relations. We presented resolutions on Kashmir in UN for, not five, but fifty times. To pass the resolution you need signatures of a certain number of member countries. Muslim countries support India but they are not ready to support Pakistan. Why? Why? Is that because Altaf Hussain is sitting there? Because Altaf Hussain is ruling? Because Altaf Hussain is stopping them?
No. When our people go to UN to push our case, the Indian diplomatic corps and diplomatic staff keep running here and there with their files. They are working hard here. Lobbying with this guy and that guy. And our people, as soon as they arrive at airport, majority of them, ask 'Where?', 'Where?', 'Where is the good-looking one (prostitute)?', 'Which bar is better?'. Listen, listen, listen. They go straight to there. They drink one. Another one. And that's it. They sleep through the night. Wake up at 9 or 10. They are half drunk with half hang-over. And they come at 12 AM like this. "Kashmir issue..". I ask 'What's happening?'. There is no character. By God, I am ashamed of them.
And when we saw the situation there, honestly, we were so upset. What do our diplomatic corps do there. Nothing. If they are not in a state of intoxication, they roam in the shopping centres. Brother, no politician will tell you these things. Why is Altaf Hussain called Enemy of the State? Why is Altaf Hussain called dirty, bad, lousy man? Is there anybody with guts to say things like these?
Brothers, Muslim countries do not support Kashmir issue because we don't lobby.
Our diplomatic corps waste their time in games and pleasures instead of persuading and convincing people.
So my brothers. I would like to say this that Kashmir's situation doesn't seem to be good. However, my Kashmiri brothers, let me say this. Ever thought why everybody used Kashmiris like a ball? Did they use you or not? Everybody tries to appear as a friend of Kashmiris. This is the time to say the right thing. Today fate, not me, brought this moment. Kashmiris, why were you used like a football? There is your fault in this too. You are at fault.
Today in this meeting - to free Kashmiris from atrocities according to their will and wishes, according to their desires and passion - I want to see a decision (on Kashmir). This is my wish. However, neither India nor Pakistan can come to a decision without the approval of Kashmiris. What do you think? So, my brothers, don't play football. This guy is a friend of Kashmir. That guy is friend of Kashmir. There is no friend. Because of this, my Kashmiri brothers, listen, listen, listen, you were being used as a football."
