Classic Story "Bhabhi" By Great Writer "Ismat Chugtai"
Ismat Chughtai was one of the most prominent and debated Indian writers of Urdu Literature. She created bold female protagonists from her varied personal experiences and tried to portray their particular resistance against male counterparts.
a young sister of Bhaiya (the old ripe
husband), who narrates the story of her brother’s many marriages. She looks through the
intricacies of these many marriages sometimes as a child narrator and sometimes as an adult
narrator. When she narrates the story as a child she took the side of her brother and she realizes
the misogynist behaviour of her brother only when she matures. The main motive of this old
husband is to make his young bride a house wife overburdened with work and children. To
fulfil his motive he first marries a young and chirpy girl, Shehnaz, nine years younger to him,
who after giving birth to four children has become passive and overweight. Shehnaz’s husband,
Bhaiya, employs conventional methods to wipe out traces of her independence: “Bhaiya was
anxious to set her up as a housewife…” (48). Even Shehnaz’s family had hands in making her
a dependent. She was educated at convent school, but due to the transgression of her sister, she
was forced to leave her studies and enter into an obligatory married life. “Bhabi came from a
liberal family and had been schooled at a convent. The previous year her sister had eloped with
a Christian, so her parents, worried that she might do something similar, took her out of school
and quickly married her off” (47) After few years of marriage the difference between Shehnaz .After devoting a lot of her time with this family, she was discarded, divorced and
thrown out of the house as if she was cancerous. After divorce, he married another beautiful girl, Shabnam his neighbour, who showed interest in him,by creating these women actually cautioned all other women about true nature of husbands and
