Lion Guardians ™
Our mission is to promote sustainable coexistence between people and lions using cultural values, community participation and science.

The Lion Guardians program was started in 2006. The impetus to create this project was in response to the slaughtering since 2001 of over 200 lions in the Amboseli-Tsavo Ecosystem.

Today, retaliatory and traditional spearing by Maasai warriors (murrans) is the greatest threat to survival of lions in Maasailand. The Lion Guardians program attempts to reduce pressure on lions by employing their greatest enemy, the Maasai warrior, to conserve rather than kill. We operate on three group ranches in the Amboseli-Tsavo Ecosystem - Mbrikiani Group Ranch, Olgulului Group Ranch and Eselenkei Group Ranch.

In the summer of 2010 in Kenya's Maasailand we held the long-awaited Lion Guardians Games -- a tournament in which our "Lion Guardians" competed in three events -- stick and spear throwing and football. The games were held to introduce the three teams of Lions Guardians from the three separate ranches on which we work and to thank the Lion Guardians for all their hard work over the past year.
