White rhinos in the wild doing what comes naturally. Conception takes place early in the rainy season in KwaZulu-Natal and the half hour of mating, in which the cow passively bears the weight of the bull, folows after 15-20 hours of persistent approaches by the bull. Calves are born after a 16 month gestation period. What we found interesting when filming the highly endangered Sumatran Rhino in Borneo is that these rhino in captivity were not mating, the theory being at the time that the bull would not mate with the cow without the competition of another male. Also, they need larger areas to move around in before mating. Filmed by Tekweni TV Productions, Durban: tekweni@iafrica.com . www.satvchannel.com . Contact details : Email tekweni@iafrica.com
