This video shows you how to set up your Nikon D5200 so that you can shoot movies.

The movie settings you really need to look at first are video mode and flicker reduction, which are both in the Setup Menu. Set Video mode to PAL if you are in Europe, or NTSC if you are in the USA. These settings effect the framerate at 1080, so it is important to get them right. Then you can set the flicker rate to 60 (USA) or 50 (EUROPE). If you leave it on Auto, it will choose the setting that fits with the PAL/NTSC choice you have already made. Auto, does not detect a flicker and synchronise with it. It merely automatically aligns with the PAL or NTSC setting.

The go to Shooting menu and select Movie settings. The first choice is Frame size/Frame rate. These refer to the size of the files (ie 424, 720 or 1080) and the nmber of frames per second being shot. Both 720 and 1080 are HD, though 1080 is known as full HD. 720 is particularly useful because the quality is very good and you can shoot at either 60 or 50p - which means that you can use it for slow motion shooting. As a rule of thumb, your shutter speed should be twice the frame rate. Obviously, the bigger the size, the better your memory card should be - not just in terms of size, but also in terms of streaming rate. Try to use Class 10 memory cards if you can.
The next option is Movie quality - which should be high (why have a D5200 and not use it to it's full potential?).
The microphone options are really important. Sound is often the most difficult thing to manage when shooting video. You can leave it on Auto and hope for the best, but we would advise that you set it manually every time before you use it. Even if you are recording on a separate device, it is worth recording sound attached to the video, as some softwares will use it to synchronise the images to the new, external sound.
Manual movie settings is the last option and it allows you to change the aperture, during your shooting.
