CBS debuted the first trailer for Supergirl on Wednesday during its upfront presentation to many rave reviews. But some couldn’t help notice how the show, which stars Glee alum Melissa Benoist as the title superhero, looked an awful lot like the recent Saturday Night Live sketch mocking Marvel’s inability to create a female superhero movie around Black Widow.

In the SNL parody, a trailer for a fake film called Black Widow: Age of Me, Black Widow works at a fashion magazine (for an editor not unlike Meryl Streep’s Miranda Priestly in The Devil Wears Prada) and tries to balance her personal life with the demands of being a superhero.

In Supergirl, a DC Comics property, the set-up is similar – right down to the Prada comparisons (Calista Flockhart fills the boss role on the series, Cat Grant). There’s more: Both trailers feature awkward romantic interactions and include scenes where the characters watch a local news report on a superhero-related turn of events. Even some images are mirrored.

But surface similarities aside, Supergirl maintains a self-awareness about the clichés it presents front and center. A discussion about capes, for instance, recalls The Incredibles‘ Edna Mode. There’s even a pointed conversation about the usage of “girl” instead of “woman,” after Supergirl is branded #supergirl by an adoring public.

“What do you think is so bad about girl?” Flockhart’s Cat asks after Benoist’s Kara wonders why her alter-ego isn’t called Superwoman. “I’m a girl and your boss and powerful and rich and hot and smart. So if you perceive Supergirl as anything less than excellent, isn’t the real problem … you?”

Supergirl will air this fall on CBS.
