Pain is temporary. It may last an hour, a day, a week or even a year. Eventually, however, it will be replaced by something else. If you quit however, the pain will last forever.
After watching Pakistan's performance in the on-going tour of Zimbabwe, at times there is one thing I couldn't help but feel was missing from the Pakistani team. In my opinion, the thing which the Pakistani players desperately need is that ruthless mentality. That mentality of when you are on the cricket field, you will leave everything you have out there on the pitch.
The Pakistani players seem to suffer from complacency extremely easily, and are only willing to put on their best performance when their backs are firmly against the wall. It's the 'cornered tiger mentality'. Some of the players in the side cannot be expected to perform well unless they find themselves in a corner. When Imran Khan made that famous cornered tiger speech he did not mean that the players put on their best and most ruthless performance only when they find themselves in a corner. The players need to have that same ruthless mentality whether they are playing against the world's number one side, or one of the smaller teams - and that mentality has to be of winning at all costs.
We saw a magnificent fight from Ajmal with the bat and ball throughout the whole first Test match, and a phenomenal knock by the veteran Younus Khan in the 2nd innings. However, what Pakistan desperately needs is for players to put on that type of fight and determination up fornt, and not wait for the team to be in danger of losing the match before stepping up to the plate. We need players at the top of the batting order, in particularly the younger players, to be willing to bat the long hard innings, and more importantly put an extremely high price tag on their wicket.
The legendary batsmen of the game -- the Viv Richards, the Ricky Pontings & even the Dravids and Inzis -- when they were batting, you could tell that they wanted to be out there in the heat of the battle. As the great Viv Richards once said - "If you wanted to get me out, you had knock me out" -- that is the kind of mentality our batsmen need to have!
I know there will be a group of people who will now take this opportunity to go on anti-Misbah rant, and about he is 'too defensive' for some peoples liking blah blah blah. That is exactly the problem! Yes the captain and coach are important, but they can only do so much! Misbah is not the issue -- he is one of the few players who has consistently gone on out there game after game grinding it out! Each and every player is responsible for his own game! When a batsmen is out in the middle -- Misbah isn't holding his bat!
The majority of the players who are currently in the Pakistani side are in dire need of working on the mental side of their game and becoming mentally stronger. The players need to have this "never quit" mentality. The players need to have this mentality where they are ruthless and desperate to win every single time they step out on that field. The players should have this mentality where they are willing to leave everything they have out on that cricket field in EVERY single game -- not only the big matches or when they are cornered. It is not until the players achieve this, that they will be able to be considered as true champions of the game.
