NEW YORK — Off-duty corrections officer Anthony Davis may have saved a man's life when he shot and killed a pit bull after it began to maul the man on a Brooklyn street on Tuesday.
Two homeless men and a female pit bull were reportedly walking near Herkimer Place in Bedford-Stuyvesant on the afternoon of September 8 when the dog suddenly became agitated and attacked one of the men.
The victim, identified only by his nickname "Bemo," desperately attempted to fight off the animal but the dog inflicted numerous wounds to his legs and arms before locking its jaws onto Bemo's body.
The second homeless individual, who was not identified but is said to be the owner of the dog, also did his best to stop the attack but neither men were powerful enough to stop it.
Luckily for Bemo, Anthony Davis, a corrections officer who works at the Brooklyn House of detention was off-duty and happened to be nearby when he heard screams for help. Davis ran over to the scene and tried his best to pry the animal off its victim, but even Davis' strong kicks were not enough to dislodge the beast's jaws.
Finally, deciding there was no other way, Davis shot the animal in the head with his personal 9mm pistol, which reports say he was carrying legally.
For several minutes after the dog had died, the men were still unable to pry its locked jaws off Bemo, but eventually he was rescued and taken to hospital where he was treated for bite wounds.
Davis said he regretted the need to kill the animal as he is fond of dogs, but those who witnessed the scene said Davis' decision to shoot very likely save the life of the individual identified as Bemo.
