Reports that AAA Wrestler El Hijo del Perro Aguayo, one of the Mexico’s top stars, died earlier this morning due to injuries he sustained during a match on Friday night, has been confirmed by the Mexico-based AAA and CMLL professional wrestling promotions.

Aguayo’s death comes after competing in a match on Friday night against former WWE Superstar Rey Mysterio. According to news reports, during the match, Aguayo ended up getting hit in his trachea, which caused severe whiplash after trying to avoid Mysterio’s 619 maneuver. Aguayo was then placed on a backbrace and was stretchered out of the Municipal Auditorium before being taken to Del Prado Hospital for treatment.

Aguayo was initially reported to be in stable condition despite being unconscious, it was then reported that Aguayo later died at 1:00 AM local time.

AAA later confirmed the news on their official Twitter page, with AAA tweeting “The grief overwhelms our hearts. Rest in peace, El Hijo del Perro Aguayo.”

Prior to his death, Aguayo also competed in a tag team match against Mysterio at the AAA Rey de Reyes event, which was Mysterio’s first match since leaving WWE.

Rey Mysterio Jr Accidentally Kill a Mexican Pro Wrestler Perro Aguayo Jr?

Mexican Pro Wrestler "Perro Aguayo Jr." Died During a Match With Former WWE Star Rey Mysterio Jr.

Mexican professional wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, who wrestled under the ring name Perro Aguayo Jr., died on Saturday, March 21, 2015 after an in-ring maneuver went wrong in Tijuana, Mexico. He was 35 years old.

Aguayo, who wrestled for the Mexico based Asistencia Asesoría y Administración, was in a tag team match with Manik against former World Wrestling Entertainment star Rey Mysterio Jr and Xtreme Tiger.

An amateur video posted to social media accounts shows Aguayo working the match fine until a drop kick from Mysterio hits him on the side of the neck and sends him onto the second rope in position for Mysterio's 619 finishing move.

When Mysterio performed the move, Aguayo didn't move and slumped to the bottom rope shortly after. The match continued as a 2-on-1 for several minutes.

Former World Championship Wrestling star Konnan came over to check on him, as did Mysterio Jr., who broke character as his opponent to inform the referee of Aguayo’s injury.

Aguayo was then stretchered out of the venue, where he was pronounced dead at Hospital Del Prado in Tijuana. One outlet has reported Aguayo’s cause of death to be cervical spine trauma.

Aguayo made his debut at age 15, according to Wikipedia. He also wrestled as El Hijo del Perro Aguayo and was the son of Mexican wrestling legend Perro Aguayo.
