Anyone familiar with the WWE knows it has had some pretty dramatic ups and downs over its career. If you’re old enough, then you likely remember the Golden Era of wrestling. Before it was the WWE, it was the WWF, and featured those classic characters like Roddy Piper, Hulk Hogan, The Iron Sheik and Ricky Steamboat. It was broadcast on ‘regular’ television meaning anyone could watch without an expensive channel subscription. It all spawned the massively popular Wrestlemania which ensured the WWE would survive for many decades to come. Of course, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Allegations of sexual harassment, steroid abuse and a number of storylines that weren’t that interesting made for a rocky situation through the 90s and early 2000s. It didn’t end there.
Always trying to attract fans and keep the show spicy, owner and CEO Vince McMahon – along with various writers – have pushed the limits on themes and storylines over the years. Sometimes these go too far and cross the line from entertainment to just plain inappropriate. Sometimes it was down to bad timing but many times, as you’ll see, these inappropriate moments were just a result of bad judgement. From racism and bullying to downright poor taste, these WWE moments turned more than a few fans off of the brand or, at a minimum, left them standing in silence with their mouths wide-open in shock.
