A Bangladeshi tabloid this week has broken news of a sensational romantic affair between Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Bilawal Bhutto, the son of late Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari. The country is said to be abuzz with news of the love affair, and the couple’s plans to marry and elope to Switzerland. The frenzy the news reports of the love affair cause this week reminisced many of the days when the Carla Bruni – Sarkozy love affair first became public !
There were many expectations of Pakistan from Bilawal Bhutto, the son of late Benazir Bhutto and President Asif Ali Zardari. But they all might be short lived if there is any truth in what a Bangladeshi tabloid reported this week. The tabloid broke the news of a romantic affair between Pakistan Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar and Bilawal Bhutto. Bilawal, who is also chairman of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party, is 11 years younger than Hina Rabbani Khar, Khar, 34, who is already married to millionaire businessman Firoze Gulzar and has two daughters named Annaya and Dina, according to the report is seeking a divorce. The report alleges that the affair came to light when Bilawal and Khar were caught in a compromising position in Zardari's official residence. The President, who then obtained mobile call records between his only son Bilawal and his foreign affairs minister Khar to confirm the affair, is said to be absolutely furious. It was also revealed that Khar sent Bilawal a greeting card on September 21 last year for his birthday with a hand-written message stating: “The foundation of our relations is eternal and soon we shall be just ourselves.” Bilawal also received a “special gift” from Khar on Eid Ul Fitr and a flower bouquet and a hand-written greeting card stating “We waited enough.... it’s time to give an end to our waiting. Eid Mubarak!” Reports said that when Zardari learnt of the affair, he called Khar and made no secret of his intense disapproval. But Khar, reportedly, asked him to refrain from “poking his nose into her personal affairs”. Despite Zardari’s aggressive attitude towards the unlikely romance, Bilawal reportedly appeared determined to go ahead with plans to marry Khar. They both have threatened to resign from the Pakistan Peoples Party. The report cites Western intelligence inputs as its source. The report said that Khar’s husband Gulzar’s affairs with other women is the reason for their crumbling marriage and Khar finding solace in Bilawal’s companionship. Close aides to the Zardari family said that Bilawal is prepared to quit politics and leave the country this year end or early 2013. Khar is also expected to resign from the ministry around the same time. They both plan to settle in Switzerland. Bilawal Bhutto is the legal nominee of Benazir Bhutto's secret wealth, allegedly worth $ 930 million, in Switzerland, along with some properties.
Beyond political boundaries, age difference and decorum expected from public figures, Bilawal Bhutto and Hina Rabbani Khar are reportedly in love. While both families have been rubbishing the reports, it hasn’t stopped tongues from wagging for there is no smoke without fire.
