"You know, everybody breast feeds in India, but giving optimal breast feeding, like for example only 30 percent to 40 percent women are able to give breast feeding within one hour, to the baby, that''s where the whole health system has to respond. Then about 20 percent babies getting exclusive breast feeding is very dismal rate, it means our system does not support women. That''s the crux."

"In most cases mothers think that their milk (alone) is not sufficient for the child. The child is still hungry, that is why they start giving top up (formula) feeds to the baby, which causes health problems. The child starts having loose motions as the formula feed is not easily digestible, whereas the mother''s milk is easily digestible for the baby and has other benefits."
