Henna is a plant that grows in the hot climates of Asia. Originally it was to use to make a paste that people of this area place on the soles of their feet, and in the palms of their hands. As the climate is very hot this application had a cooling effect that absorb through the hands and feet into the body. This cooling effect would last for as long as the paste was on. However, as the paste dries up, it left patterns in the skin which can last anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks. The patterns gave people the ideas for the designs and decorations to start this tradition.
