This is a lovely film, that was shown an applauded in art houses and film festivals around the world. It's a story from Belgium about a young gay man, Thomas, who's best friend is a single mother. She tragically dies, leaving her son, Gregoire, without a future, a family and a home. The boy is put into care by the youth services of their country. He is cared for well, but he is very sad and wants more then anything to be in the care of his mothers friend Thomas. Who has been a friend, mentor and father figure to the boy for his entire life. Time and time again Gregoire runs away to be with Thomas, and time and time again the social workers take him and place him with people he doesn't want to be with. During this time, Thomas grows to love and feel a great responsibility for Gregoire and is torn between the life he loves in the hardcore under ground gay scene and taking on the responsibility of parenthood. A parental relationship that would involve escaping from their country to find freedom and the means to be the father that the boy needs, deserves and desperately wants. The parent, that the boys mother wanted her son to be with. In extremis [To The Extreme] re-defines the modern family and sheds light on the unusual paths that love and friendship are able to take. A brilliant drama about loss, sex, love, sacrifice and family... Loaded with awesome performances, a sharp and unflinching script, some very graphic scenes in the European LGBT underground, and a love story between father and son that embraces the tolerance and purity only a child can seem to know and feel and reason. An ability to know who and what is right and wrong, and what is good and decent and caring, and what really matters in life, and how many shapes and sizes and colors and genders and ages a clean and loving friendship can take and the choices all people are faced with at various times in life. The choice of doing what is right, or doing what is popular.
