The study of 14,000 new mothers also found that there was a large increase in the risk of depression in mothers who had planned to breastfeed but were then unable to. The health benefits of breastfeeding a child are well-known, and the World Health Organisation advises parents to feed a child nothing but breast milk for the first six months of its life. One in ten women will develop post-natal depression, with the journal Maternal and Child Health calling for more support for women unable to breastfeed.
