For the best representation of video quality, please adjust video settings to 480p and above for viewing in a window (720p for fullscreen). Light source switches from constant to strobing at 7secs and this camera records at 500fps, adjusted to play back at 30fps. Six cycles are seen with the stroboscope over 1 minute.

Combining the benefits of using a high speed, HD camera with a stroboscopy xenon light source, we were able to capture exceptional detail of the vocal cords dynamics at 500fps. The high speed camera gives us an advantage by being able to see voicing starts and stops and the strobe provides seeing vocal fold edge, mucosa and microvasculature during phonation. What is not able to be seen completely is aperiodic vibrations, very short voicing segments as well as spasms during the stroboscope illumination.

This is the advantage of our other system we are developing which is able to do 2,500fps in 720p, HD resolution and 1,500fps in 1080p resolution. Being able to see the total vocal fold dynamics regardless of periodicity is an ideal setup and can be done without a stroboscope, using a 150-300W constant xenon light source instead. Unfortunately, these systems are quite expensive and more complex in hardware design. This is where our new found solution of using a high speed camera, stroboscope lighting and PC based, image optimization techniques can thrive.
