In autumn 2012 I was asked to arrange for the BBC Philharmonic and two Pakistani singers Shazia Manzoor and Quratulain Balouch. Even though I've always wanted to work with the BBC Phil being a Manchester boy myself,I was about to turn it down through lack of time but I switched on the you tube to find them -- and was knocked for six - what singers they are -- both different in approach but both uniquely powerful and emotional.
There was no question. I had to do it.
With just 3 weeks to do it in it nearly killed me -- but was worth every moment.
To work with these two great singers was an honour and deeply inspiring.
In Dum Mast Qalandar QB told me the words were evoking Allah, so rather than accompany the singers, I decided to make the orchestra represent Allah, gradually rising from the root note and bathing the singers in power and beauty.
So,this is Christians and Muslims working together and creating something powerful and beautiful. I hope you enjoy these two amazing singers and this superb orchestra,
